Nanjing Weather

Nanjing is a very humid region, with the humidity maintaining levels well above the 70% mark, throughout the year, with the colder months depicting around 74-76% humidity, while the warmer months go just above 80%.

This is largely due to the effects of the East Asian Monsoon, which accounts for a lot of rainy days each month, with just about every month expected to have at least six to seven rainy days, while some months can experience up to 11 and 12 rainy days.

Monthly Weather Breakdown

Winter: Winter is generally short in Nanjing, running for a period of about three months proper, from December to February, with the average monthly temperature for this period bouncing around between 3.5 to 4 degrees Celsius, sometimes going down as low as 2 to -1 degrees Celsius, which accounts for some snowfall at times.

During the winter months, the highs only get up to about 7-10 degrees Celsius, but this brief period of highs is very short-lived and often negated by the frequent rainfall, in the form of humidity that maintains levels of around the mid-70s, even in winter.

Again, the fluctuations in daily highs and lows are very high, so a spring day in Nanjing could suddenly go from feeling like mid-winter to early summer.

Travel Tips

Depending on the activities lined up, on your trip to Nanjing, the best time to visit will almost always be in autumn, since the winters get really cold and wet, while the summers get extremely hot and wet, while spring is very unpredictable and can sometimes appear to be just like winter.

The period of the end of September to the end of November is the most comfortable period, weather-wise, but that may mean you'll have to sacrifice some of the sightseeing that comes with winter, like snowfall.

Clothing Tips

Since the autumn season serves as the best time to visit, as far as your clothing goes, the best approach is to pack for all seasons of the year, since a single autumn day could very well resemble all four seasons, especially if you are planning to travel over the whole day.

Mornings can get a bit chilly, but nothing over the top, so a light sweatshirt will usually do, but be sure to keep a jacket nearby since morning and evening temperatures can drop all the down to around 6 degrees Celsius.

Pack a sun hat as well, to go with long pants (jeans will do) and your light sweatshirt, since the weakish sun may deceive you into being susceptible to the ultra-violet rays that cause sunburn.
