We only had about 8 hours to spend in Shanghai but we didn’t want to sit around the airport. Our delightful young guide, Candy, met us at the airport and showed us the very modern side of the city as we headed to the city centre. Here she took as along “the Bund”, a promenade beside the Yellow River and bordered by a row of elegant European style buildings, erected by European traders in the late 1800s and early 1900s, a very important era that saw Shanghai develop as an important port. Candy then took us to part of “old Shanghai”, the Yuyuan Gardens, to see an historic home built in 1577 by a government officer of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Adjacent is the colourful Yuyuan Bazaar, where we had a traditional mid-day meal and enjoyed the many shops catering to tourists. Candy was a font of knowledge and gave us a feel for these two characteristic areas of a fascinating city.
